IRP Information for Commercial Motor Vehicle Transporters
About the International Registration Plan (IRP)
The International Registration Plan or IRP is a reciprocity agreement between the District of Columbia, the states of the US, and the provinces of Canada. It recognizes the registration of commercial motor vehicles issued by other jurisdictions. The registration and fees for motor carriers are typically paid to a single jurisdiction. The fee is calculated using the percentage of total distance traveled in each jurisdiction in accordance with the fee schedule for that jurisdiction; the resulting fees are then divided to the jurisdictions that are applicable. Motor carriers that are registered with the IRP are issued allocated plates and are permitted to travel through all of the member countries of the IRP. Commercial motor vehicles that weigh more than 26,000 pounds (11,794 kilograms) and that travel in two or more jurisdictions, are likely registered under IRP. This applies whether the vehicles are operated individually or in combination.
The main idea behind IRP is to promote and encourage the utilization of the highway system to the greatest extent that is feasible.
IRP Information – Registration:
In order to register your vehicle with IRP allotted license plates and, as a result, be allowed to operate in different states or provinces, motor carriers must first register in the jurisdiction that serves as their base (state or province). Get in touch with the relevant authorities in your state or province to learn about the specific information and requirements HERE.
Other questions Regarding IRP:
You should also get in touch with the jurisdiction in where you have your base for information regarding:
